Colder weather is here and with it comes the flu and other viruses that can have a harmful effect on people of all ages. The flu, short for influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness that can infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can be mild or severe, and can even be deadly.
Anyone can get the flu; the best thing to do is start taking steps toward prevention. One key step is to get the flu vaccine. The vaccine has been shown to reduce flu illness as well as the severe complications that can come from having the flu. Other preventative actions include staying away from others who are sick, frequent hand washing, and covering coughs and sneezes. If you feel like you are coming down with the flu, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
