Celebrate Sober: Tips for a Joyful Holiday Season

The holidays are filled with joy and celebration. But for some, they can also trigger emotions and behaviors that affect your mental health and use of substances. Here are a few tips for maintaining your sobriety during the holidays:

  1. Plan ahead for holiday functions: Know who will be there, if alcohol and other substances will be present, and when to use your exit strategy.
  2. Prioritize self-care: Keep up with your hobbies, get good sleep, exercise daily, and eat a healthy diet.
  3. Stay connected: Lean on family, friends, and sponsors who will encourage you to stay sober.
  4. Avoid triggers: These could be people who pressure you to drink, certain situations, or alcohol altogether.
  5. Create new traditions: Host a party with non-alcoholic beverages, take a walk to see the Christmas lights, or volunteer in your community!
  6. Learn to say no: Establish boundaries around your sobriety and stick to them; this means saying no to events that might cause you to slip up.

And most importantly, give yourself grace! Staying sober can be challenging, especially during the holidays. But with the right strategies and support, you can have a happy and healthy holiday season. Your recovery journey is worth it, and so are you.
